Does an NPI expire?
No. A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a permanent 10-digit identification number issued by CMS through NPPES and does not expire. However, healthcare providers must keep their NPPES record current by reporting any changes (such as practice address, phone number, or primary taxonomy) within 30 days.
What is Medicare enrollment revalidation?
Medicare enrollment revalidation is the process by which CMS confirms that currently enrolled providers continue to meet all federal requirements and maintain active billing privileges. Revalidation occurs generally every 5 years for physicians and non-physician practitioners, and every 3 years for DMEPOS suppliers, administered through PECOS and your regional Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC).
How do I find my Medicare enrollment revalidation due date?
CMS publishes revalidation due dates up to 7 months in advance on the CMS Medicare Revalidation List tool (data.cms.gov). Providers can also check their enrollment record directly inside CMS PECOS. Your regional MAC also issues an official revalidation notice 60 to 90 days before your due date.
What happens if a Medicare revalidation deadline is missed?
If revalidation materials are not submitted by the required due date, your MAC can deactivate your Medicare billing privileges. While deactivated, providers cannot bill Medicare, claims are rejected, and services rendered during the lapse cannot be billed retroactively.
